Care
Damascus steel care guide: cleaning and storage
Damascus steel looks incredible, but it still needs everyday care. These steps prevent rust, keep the pattern crisp, and protect the edge between sharpenings.
Daily cleaning routine
- Hand wash with mild soap and warm water.
- Dry immediately with a soft towel.
- Store safely before moisture can settle on the blade.
What to avoid
- Dishwashers (heat and detergents dull the edge).
- Soaking the knife in a sink or leaving it wet.
- Cutting on glass, granite, or metal surfaces.
Rust prevention
Damascus steel can spot if it stays damp. If you live in a humid area, wipe the blade with a small amount of food-safe mineral oil once a month.
Storage tips
- Use a magnetic strip, knife block, or edge guard.
- Keep blades separated to avoid edge damage.
- Avoid loose drawers where the edge can strike metal.
When to sharpen
If slicing tomatoes feels rough or you need extra pressure for herbs, it is time to sharpen. Use a whetstone and finish with a light hone.
